Harpist and lutenist Christina Pluhar brings her arrestingly virtuosic ensemble to Washington for the first time. La Tarantella is a sensual, festive journey in time and geography, with enchanting, spellbinding improvisations that dissolve the boundaries between conventional notions of “early music,” traditional music, and jazz. Famed Italian singer Lucilla Galeazzi and a dancer versed in teatrodanza and commedia dell'arte styles join this captivating “luxury continuo band,” tracing the tarantella's Southern Italian origins from a cure for a tarantula's bite to a vivid tradition still alive today.

The Songbird: Francesca Caccini at the Medici Court

Francesca Caccini was one of the guiding spirits behind the revolutionary music of the earliest operas and the brilliant solo songs of the Baroque. Composer of a wide range of solo songs, duets, and stage msuic, she is perhaps best known for her La Liberazione di Ruggiero, the first opera by a woman, which premiered in 1625. Known as La Checcina, or the songbird, Caccini was also a virtuoso singer, and this program features her powerfully dramatic songs and the dazzling string and keyboard music of the early Baroque. With soprano Michele Kennedy, harpsichordist Joseph Gascho, and period strings.

Medieval Women: Saints & Sinners

Join the modern women of Armonia Nova as they offer you a glimpse of women living in medieval times expressing a gamut of sacred to secular passions. This is music of and about women and their daily lives; how they were viewed and how they viewed themselves. Women dedicated to love of the sacred and women focused on the secular things of life – women behaving nobly and women behaving "badly." The time is remote, the glimpse is small, but the thoughts and feelings of the women described are remarkably modern – we could expect to meet some of them today.

The Art of the Fugue

Johann Sebastian Bach Die Kunst der Fugue, BWV 1080

Bach's great exposition and meditation on the fugue, created at the end of his life, is considered his last will and testament, or, in Christopher Wolff's words, "the attainment of an ultimate goal, the 'be-all and end-all' of an extraordinarily strong willed artistic personality." Glenn Gould said of the work, "There's never been anything more beautiful in all of music." The Art of the Fugue was not written for any specific instrumentation. Although it can be performed on solo keyboard, in this rare performance of the complete work we'll hear it in different ensemble groupings including string ensemble, harpsichord and organ.

East Meets West

This concert will showcase two vibrant Washington area women’s ensembles. Slaveya, which specializes in the traditional vocal music of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region, will join Illuminare in a program featuring traditional folksongs, contemporary music inspired by folk traditions, and sacred works from Bulgaria and the Republic of Georgia. Selections by Hildegard von Bingen and other early composers of Western Europe will be woven into the program, offering a uniquely contrasting listening experience.

Co-founded by Bejamin Perrot and Florence Bolton, La Rêveuse (the feminine form of "The Dreamer") is a chamber music ensemble composed of soloists whose aim is to revive selected works of the 17th and 18th century – an age sparkling with artistic experimentation and invention. Eloquent in their mastery of color and richness of continuo, the musicians of La Rêveuse share with audiences not only the musical beauty – but also the rhetorical, spiritual and poetic force – of this répertoire.

The Renaissance was a time of rebirth in learning, science, and the arts throughout Europe, and music was an essential part of this flowering. The rich interchange of ideas in Europe, as well as political, economic and religious events, led to major changes in styles of composing, methods of disseminating music, and types of instruments.

Musician and musicologist Tina Chancey explores this lively era's musical repertoire through lectures highlighted by recordings, demonstrations, and performances.

The seminar includes a concert of selections by composers discussed during the day, featuring Rosa Lamoreaux and Howard Bass.

You Decide: Bach's Audition at Leipzig

Would you hire Bach? After Telemann turned down the position of Cantor of Leipzig in 1722, the Leipzig Town Council held auditions to fill the post. Johann Christoph Graupner won the audition, but Bach received the appointment after Graupner's employer would not release him from his duties. Now you get to decide if their decision was right! This program explores the audition works heard by the people and Leipzig Town Council: stunning cantatas by J.S. Bach, Georg Kauffmann and Johann Graupner. At the end, we'll tally your votes and see who you feel should have received this coveted position.
